Scope: what it handles and what it refuses or redirects 4. Behavioural rules, written as positives rather than a list of prohibitions 5. Output format expectations, with an example 6. Tone and register, with a sample sentence 7. How to handle uncertainty, and the instruction to say so rather than guess 8. How to handle requests outside scope 9. Edge cases likely to arise and the intended behaviour for each 10. The instruction most likely to be forgotten over a long conversation, and how to reinforce it Test the prompt against the three hardest inputs before shipping it. Vague instructions such as be helpful do no work; specify the behaviour you actually want. Tone: precise and unambiguous. Every sentence must constrain something.
